report on my choice for my 1st assessed project

After much thinking i have decided to based my three page web page on an area that reflects my personal enthusiasms. Im making the design manga based.

Maybe look at a online comic book page, taking influences from pages such as Mega Tokyo, and creating a comic book site where user up load there comic, and the site offers tutorials for user to complete and do in the online forums.
Or maybe looking at designing a page for a manga avatar site, such as MechQuest where users can interact online.

i want to make the site interactive for the user, if i was designing the avatar site, an idea might be to let the user create there own avatar, which would probs mean it would have to be created in 2d, but from the looks of Mechquest is looks 2d based. to be honest tho i prefer working 2d, but i know i will have to better my 3d skills in time.

Another idea was to create a moch page advertising a manga game or animation. Taking ideas from my favourite manga films, for the style layout of the page.

I also want to get back into drawing and lean how to create digitaly Art work so im hoping this will make me get back into the process as i wouldn't to create the characters for the page on paper, then scan and paint the ditialy on my mac to create the effect im after.

I like the idea of making the site as a RPG , Avatar style, where the user designs his own character use in the online world. Could have a forum on the site as well and the option of the user designing building that would be implemented into the online world.
The site could ahve templates available if some isn't as gd at drawing they could download and customise to how they want.

i feel this would give people who enjoy drawing manga, share there ideas and loves in an online environment.

Fr this project im going to take inspiration from Final Fantasy, mega Tokyo, MechQuest and also various manga films such as, Ghost in the Shell, Spirted Away, Holws Moving Castle

Dan Saffer

From reading the interview by Dan Saffer concerning the question, self teaching vs design education, Dans views are that design eduction has been intrusmental in his design learning. He stated that Interaction design and typography education changed the way he thought about design and influenced the work he did.

Dan praises the education he gained but also praise's self teaching,
'All that being said, there is certainly value in learning things on your own. There are lots of good books out there now that, when combined with trying out what they suggest with hands-on work, can give you a foundation you can use for design'

which is true, if you want a board knowledge of design and be up to date on design, you need self teaching along side education.

He goes on to state that having a board knowledge of other design principles goes a long way, such as film making , art and biology. When asked what are the core elements of an interaction that web designers measure during the creative process, Saffer goes on to say,

'Usefulness, usability, and desirability. If your design fills a need in people's lives, works well, and looks beautiful, you've got design gold. There are lots of secondary characteristics that fall under these headings, like efficiency and balance and trustworthiness and a whole host of other traits, most of which can only be fuzzily measured but are important nonetheless'.
quote taken from Dan Saffer/ Design interviews.

This quote says it all really about about what web design should be about. usability and the style of the web page are the main things to consider when designing a web page.

He later talk abouts touchscreen devices and how designers need to learn about these new devices if they want to succeed in interaction design. One thing i want to look into this year is implementing touchscreen and sensors into my design work.
